London, 1987 (01)
Michael Crawford, Claire Moore (alt? u/s?), Steve Barton
Missing the Prologue, Little Lotte, The Mirror, and the Title Song. Act 1 is far and away better quality than Act 2 - the latter being barely listenable with tons of hiss and significant generation loss. So I'm splitting the grade, the higher being Act 1. Crawford is excellent here - his MOTN runs over six minutes. This has also often been traded as London, March 27, 1987.
(The number in parenthesis after the date is simply a part of my filing system.)
London, 1987 (02)
Michael Crawford, Rebecca Caine (alt), Steve Barton, Rosemary Ashe, Janet Devenish, Mary Millar, John Savident, David Firth, John Aron
SOUNDBOARD. BEAUTIFUL quality audio. Very mild hiss when the volume is jacked up. Still, much better quality than I thought I was getting so no complaints!
(The number in parenthesis after the date is simply a part of my filing system.)
London, 1987 (03)
Michael Crawford, Maria Kesselman (u/s), Steve Barton
SOUNDBOARD, HIGHLIGHTS, runs 32 minutes. Only eight tracks (Overture, part of Think Of Me, The Mirror/Phantom Of The Opera, Music Of The Night, All I Ask Of You/I Gave You My Music, part of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Point Of No Return, and part of Final Lair.) Final Lair was SERIOUSLY edited. I wonder if this was planned for use as some sort of promo, or as sound clips? The quality on this one however is absolutely FANTASTIC. Very very VERY mild hiss that's only heard at the quietest of moments (example, as Michael cries before, during and after "Christine I love you" during the Final Lair.)
OMG, Michael GROWLS just before he says, "You try my patience!"
On the rare side, I haven't seen this one floating about.
(The number in parenthesis after the date is simply a part of my filing system.)

London, June 15, 1987
Michael Crawford, Rebecca Caine, Steve Barton
HIGHLIGHTS. Act 1 runs about 46 minutes, Act 2 about 35 minutes. Some very strange tracking choices - MOTN is broken two tracks. Quite a bit of analog hiss - it sometimes overpowers the audio. But there are some decent quality moments in there as well. On the rare side as far as audios go.
London, June 23, 1987
Michael Crawford, Rebecca Caine, Steve Barton
SOUNDBOARD.Fully tracked. BEAUTIFUL quality. Very very minor amount of hiss - only heard when I've got the volume up past the halfway mark.
Have I said it lately how happy I am all these early London soundboards have popped up?
On the rare side.

SOUNDBOARD.
Gorgeous sound quality, very minor amount of analog hiss from what is likely an early generation transfer.
London, February 10, 1988 (matinee)
Dave Willets, Rebecca Caine (alt), Michael Ball
SOUNDBOARD.HIGHLIGHTS only, focused on Christine. (Also not the same as the other Dave/Rebecca Soundboards.) Very mild hiss - noticible only when I jack the volume up. Of course, when I do that it also becomes clear how CLEAR this is - I can hear the swish of Rebecca's dress in AIAOY for example.
London - February 18, 1988
Dave Willets, Rebecca Caine (alt), Michael Ball, Yvette Davis (u/s Carlotta)
SOUNDBOARD.Starts at Christine's Think of Me. (Also not the same as the other Dave/Rebecca Soundboards.) Dave sounds so much like MC (IE in the opening of Wandering Child) at times that for a moment I wondered if this was mislabeled. But no, upon listening closer it's definitely Willets.
Clear enough that you can hear Dave enunciate every word that ends with "T" (fight, it, night, etc.)

MUCH better quality than the earlier audio of Barrett. Previous trader had a question mark by Sierra's name, anyone care to confirm it's her?
Mild overload on the loud bits, nothing out of the norm. Slightly echo-y. Wonder if it was taped by the same person as the July 2 audio?

The Phantom of the Opera
1985 | Sydmonton Festival | Mega | AVI
Cast: Colm Wilkinson, Sarah Brightman, Clive Carter,
Notes: World premiere. The show wasn’t done yet, so it’s only 45 minutes long. The lyrics are also very different from the finished product. Awful video quality, decent audio quality
London - 1987
Michael Crawford, Rebecca Caine, Steve Barton
Very choppy highlights and very poor picture. Act I goes from the chandelier to Notes I; Prima Donna through the rooftop is audio only with still images on the screen. Act II starts with Masquerade and goes through the end of Notes II. Almost no color other than blues and greys. There's some head obstruction and it's mostly filmed in wide zooms with a few close-ups. Also includes: the pro-shot music video of POTO with Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley, a POTO-related TV commercial and about 30 minutes or so of TV clips related to the LA production (with Michael Crawford and Dale Kristien). I really only recommend this for collectors.
New York? - 1987 (OBC Rehearsal footage)
Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Steve Barton, Harold Prince
This is about forty minutes of rehearsal footage. It starts with "those who have seen your face" of Phantom of the Opera and continues through MOTN with some interruptions from the creative team (it's a riot watching Michael remove his invisible cape and hat). Then it's to the beginning of Masquerade, a slight tape pause then a cut to the dance towards the end of Masquerade, another tape pause, and then Red Death makes his appearance. More Masquerade work after that segment. Then they work on Notes I and a section of Prima Donna but the taper generally stays focused on the production crew, not the actors. The video quality isn't the greatest - the sound has some buzzing, the picture flickers and is fversion

Michael Crawford (Phantom), Sarah Brightman (Christine), Steve Barton, and full OBC.
Given it's age, the fact it spent a long time on VHS and the obvious generation loss issues that will go with it being traded down Heaven knows how many times... I doesn't get better than this.
C+
London - 1988
Dave Willets, Jan Hartley-Morris, Michael Ball
Huge generation loss, sound jumps sometimes. Missing the auction scene and the Overture is audio only. Also missing the scene in Act II after Masquerade and the Entr'acte, and may be missing other minor points, but nothing major. Only video of Dave's Phantom. There is constant snow at the bottom of the screen and the picture is extremely jumpy. Dave's voice isn't as powerful as I usually prefer, but as far as vocal acting (and physical acting, as well) I like him. He gets nice and growly at times, which I love. His Final Lair is fabulous (especially right after "I gave my mind blindly"--he stares at Jan for a long moment then shakes his head and says "No, no") Jan has a lovely voice. Because of the quality, I really only recommend this to collectors or fans of a particular actor in the cast.
Broadway - October 8, 1988 (MC's Final Performance – includes his speech)
Michael Crawford, Patti Cohenour, Steve Barton, Nick Wyman, Cris Groenendaal, Judy Kaye, David Romano, Leila Martin
Great quality video considering its age. The taper obviously knows the show well. Facial features can't quite be distinguished but the sound quality is great. Crawford's final speech is moving. There are no chapter divisions.

Notes: Great sound and picture color. Mostly mid-zoom and wide shots with nice close-ups. Some great closeups, but the actual zooming is unsteady and fast. Some cover-ups including almost the entire Il Muto ballet and Raoul's jump into the lake. Some severe pixilation on extreme close-ups. Brad is fabulous as always, and Marni adds some interesting touches to the role of Christine.

The Phantom of the Opera
